Sarasota County Emergency Services advises seeking safety immediately upon hearing thunder, regardless of proximity. Enclosed buildings provide the best protection from lightning strikes, whereas sheds, picnic shelters, and tents do not shield from lightning. It is crucial to remain indoors until at least 30 minutes after the last thunder rumble.

Your chances of being struck by lightning significantly increase when outdoors during a thunderstorm, as lightning can strike from up to 10 miles away. Activities like golfing, boating, running, grilling, walking, construction, riding, gardening, and swimming have been associated with recent lightning strikes.

Remember: "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!" and "See a Flash, Dash Inside!"
