**Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month Promotes Protective Factors**

September marks Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, with the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) focusing on education and resources to support the mental health of first responders. As part of the #MindfulMonday initiative, the SFFD highlights protective factors that can help reduce the risk of suicide.

Key protective factors include:

- Increasing social connection

- Reducing access to lethal means

- Early and frequent connections with mental health resources

- Developing resiliency and coping skills

The SFFD urges individuals to be mindful of their feelings, especially after challenging shifts. Stress and trauma can accumulate, emphasizing the importance of recognizing when support is needed.

For immediate assistance, those in need can call, text, or chat 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor available 24/7. Resources specific to SFFD members and their families include support from the Behavioral Health Unit, ComPysch Employee Assistance Program, Office of Employee Health, and San Francisco Health Service System.

Contact information for these resources is as follows:

- SFFD Behavioral Health Unit On-Call Mainline: (415) 940-5820

- SFFD ComPysch Employee Assistance Program: (833) 541-2341

- SFFD Office of Employee Health: (415) 558-3446
