Increase in Facebook Marketplace Robberies Urges Caution

Staff Report / jaxlocal.org

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) has reported a recent increase in robberies associated with transactions made on Facebook Marketplace. Two teenagers, aged 14 and 17, were arrested for robbing a man who wanted to buy a PlayStation. The suspects allegedly held the victim at gunpoint, stole cash, and fled into nearby woods. Officers were able to apprehend the teenagers based on the victim's description. Law enforcement also seized several firearms from the suspects, including one fully automatic firearm equipped with a switch.

To date, JSO has investigated 16 robbery cases linked to Facebook Marketplace this year. Officials urge the public to take extreme care when buying or selling items on online platforms. They recommend meeting in well-lit, secure areas, such as the Police Memorial Building located at 501 East Bay Street or any of the city's six district substations, to ensure safer transactions.
