Cornell Cadet Explores Medicine, Military at Walter Reed

Ethan Qasemi ’27, an Army ROTC cadet and pre-med student at Cornell University, spent his summer at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He worked alongside his older brother, Massimo, an NYU student and ROTC cadet, observing surgeries, shadowing in clinics, and participating in biomechanics research with mentor Dr. AJ Pisano.

Ethan was involved in projects focused on stabilizing long bone shaft fractures using devices such as plates and screws. He analyzed how different fixation methods performed under stress. He also gained experience in plastic surgery under the guidance of Dr. Ean R. Saberski, learning about precision-based reconstructive techniques.

Throughout the program, the brothers supported each other while reflecting on cases and exploring Washington, D.C. Their shared experience strengthened their commitment to medicine and military service. Ethan, who is majoring in Human Biology, Health and Society in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell and attending on a four-year Army ROTC scholarship, said that spending time with his brother during the program made the experience especially meaningful.

The summer at Walter Reed provided Ethan with a clearer vision of his future, highlighting the role of physicians in providing advanced care while supporting the military mission. Photo credit for the coverage goes to Annan Productions and the NYU Photo Bureau.
