Honors Project Reveals North American Wind Chill Warming

Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, reported that a summer-published article is the second peer-reviewed journal article to emerge from a student’s 2016 honors project. The work was conducted by Macy Howarth Testani ’16, Cameron Crowell ’26, Matthew Sinnenberg from the University at Albany, and Geoscience Professor Neil Laird. Their study, published in The Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, analyzed wind chill data from the past 40 years and found that both average and extreme wind chill temperatures have warmed across most parts of North America.

In the context of the Earth-Atmosphere system, energy certainly exists. The study and related work on energy exchange refer to three main modes: conduction, which is energy transfer through collisions of molecules; convection, which is the vertical movement of heat that can include both sensible and latent heat transfer; and radiation, the transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves or moving subatomic particles. This balance of energy—input, output, and storage change—is a fundamental aspect of atmospheric science.
