Cornell Advances Hemp-Based Construction in New York
Cornell University reports new developments in hemp-based building materials. Builder Jeff Gagnon of Ulster County, New York, has used equipment bought by Cornell to spray hemp lime insulation. The hemp lime composite is made from the inner part of hemp stalks mixed with lime binder. According to Gagnon, the material helps keep spaces warm in winter, cool in summer, and quiet, without emitting toxins.
The equipment was first used in November and is part of a larger project. New York state has invested in an effort at Cornell to create a hemp processing hub. The center will work as a service facility for researching, developing, and testing new hemp-based construction materials that may aid New York state farmers and businesses.
Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) in Ulster County held a full conference on December 9. More than 90 stakeholders, including growers, community organizers, processors, and investors, gathered to discuss research, best practices, and future opportunities related to hemp-based products. The planning for the equipment and other capital projects is expected to continue until early 2029.
