The Tompkins County Legislature proclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth in Tompkins County and encouraged residents to participate in community celebrations commemorating emancipation and African American history.

The proclamation was received by youth of the Southside Community Center, Inc., which the post said has supported and empowered Black American residents in the region for the past 90 years. The post said the center was recognized from the heart of the historically Black Southside neighborhood in Ithaca.

The Southside Community Center, Inc. said it will host its annual Juneteenth Festival block party on Saturday, June 20.
