Sarasota Schools Enhance Safety with Weapons Detection System

Staff Report / sarasotalocal.org

Sarasota County Schools is implementing the OpenGate® Weapons Detection System across all traditional public middle and high school campuses to enhance safety for students, staff, and visitors. This system includes walk-through metal and weapons detectors that quickly scan individuals for prohibited items.

As part of this initiative, there are specific guidelines for individuals entering the schools. The following items must be removed from bags and handed to staff before passing through the detection system:

- Laptops

- Tablets

- Gaming devices

- Metal 3-ring binders

- Metal spiral notebooks

The rollout of the OpenGate system will occur gradually, with Riverview High School currently using the system and Booker High School designated as the next campus to implement it. For more information, visit the Sarasota County Schools website.
