Cornell Pioneers Nanoscopic Antiferromagnetic Spin Control

Researchers at Cornell University have made progress in detecting and controlling the movement of electron spins in antiferromagnetic materials. Unlike ferromagnets, which have aligned spins that create an external magnetic field, antiferromagnets feature spins that cancel each other out, making it difficult to detect their dynamics.

In a recent study titled “Spin-filter tunneling detection of antiferromagnetic resonance with electrically-tunable damping,” the team demonstrated an innovative method that combines two-dimensional antiferromagnetic materials with tunnel junctions. This approach makes it possible to monitor spin motions electrically on a micrometer scale—nearly 1,000 times smaller than previous millimeter-scale devices used for such measurements.

The development provides a potential pathway toward technologies that could enable ultra-fast information transfer and higher frequency communications, a long-sought goal in the field of physics.
