Global Bovine Art Exhibit Raises $40M for Charity

In the summer of 1999, an outdoor exhibit in Chicago featured 300 life-sized fiberglass cows turned into works of art. The exhibit marked the beginning of what would become a long-running series of bovine-themed public art shows. Jerry Elbaum, a Cornell alumnus who founded the organization behind the exhibits, said the shows now take place in more than 100 cities around the world, including events on five continents.

According to Cornell University reports, the bovine art shows have generated nearly $40 million for charitable causes, many of which support children’s hospitals. Elbaum, along with his wife Judith Brody Elbaum, who is also an alumna, has helped create an event that has attracted tourists and raised funds while bringing art into public spaces. The displays continue to be described as “a happy event” that brings smiles to people’s faces.
