**Wake County EMS Introduces Life-Saving Opioid Treatment in the Field**
Raleigh, North Carolina – Wake County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is taking innovative steps to combat the opioid crisis with the launch of the EMS MOUD program. This initiative allows Wake County’s Advanced Practice Paramedics to administer buprenorphine, a medication used to treat opioid use disorder, directly in the field.
Traditionally, treatment for opioid use disorder begins only after patients are admitted to a hospital. However, this new approach starts the life-saving process earlier by providing care at the scene of an emergency. The goal is to give patients a better chance at recovery by initiating treatment sooner.
The program has shown encouraging results during its first year, signaling a positive impact on the community. Wake County EMS plans to continue and expand its efforts to reach more individuals in need of support.
