Two fires in two hours hit Bend

Bend Fire & Rescue crews responded to two separate fires within about two hours on Monday, according to the agency.

Shortly after 8 a.m., crews were called to a structure fire west of Bend on Hwy 20 near Dayton and Tweed roads. Firefighters found a shop fully engulfed and flames spreading into nearby brush. With no water supply, the crews took a defensive approach, including protecting nearby structures and stopping the fire’s spread. Firefighters knocked down the fire in about 40 minutes.

Bend Fire & Rescue said the shop was a total loss, with an estimated $100,000 in structural damage and $50,000 in contents loss. The cause of the structure fire was under investigation.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., crews responded to a second fire near SW Yates Rd and SW Century Dr. The agency said it was a brush fire that was quickly stopped before threatening structures.

In the second incident, Bend Fire & Rescue said the fire started from lawn edging equipment that created a spark. The agency said with extreme fire danger, even small sparks can start wildfires, and it urged people to use caution with equipment and avoid activities that could ignite dry grass.

The department cited helpful factors in limiting spread, including the property owner’s vegetation management, which it said helped slow the fire and keep it from reaching beyond the property toward Gerking Market Rd and Hwy 20. The agency also listed mutual aid partners and support agencies that responded, including Redmond Fire & Rescue, Cloverdale RFPD, Alfalfa Fire & Rescue, the U.S. Forest Service, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Oregon, and Oregon State Police.
