**Salisbury Fire Department Honors Sergeant Ben Koons as Firefighter of the Year**
Salisbury, Maryland – On October 15, 2024, Sergeant Ben Koons received the distinction of Firefighter of the Year from the Salisbury Fire Department (SFD). This honor was bestowed upon him by his peers in recognition of his exemplary service and leadership.
Earlier this year, Sgt. Koons was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His leadership was notably displayed during an incident involving a hazardous condition at a local rental home, where firefighters discovered a leaking fuel oil tank in the basement. Concerned for the safety of the family residing in the home, which included a mother and her children, he declared the house unsafe for occupancy. Following his intervention to mitigate the situation, Sgt. Koons took the additional step of reserving and paying for a hotel room for the displaced family, demonstrating his commitment to their welfare.
The award ceremony took place at the Fire Museum located at Fire Station 16, where Fire Chief Rob Frampton and Mayor Randy Taylor presented the Firefighter of the Year award to Sgt. Koons. His family, co-workers, and members of his shift attended the event to celebrate this recognition.
Sgt. Koons' actions embody the Salisbury Fire Department's core values and highlight his dedication to the community.
